Hilary Ann Barry (born 4 December 1969) is a well-known New Zealand journalist and TV star. She is famous for co-hosting Seven Sharp on TVNZ 1 with Jeremy Wells. Before this, she was a newsreader on TV3 for many years. Until 2016, she presented the 6 pm Newshub show alongside Mike McRoberts. She also read the news on the Paul Henry morning TV show when it first started. Hilary Barry left these roles in April 2016.

About Hilary Barry's Life

Hilary Barry went to Queen Margaret College in Wellington. She attended from 1980 to 1987 and was the head girl in her final year. After school, she studied Linguistics at Victoria University of Wellington. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. She also completed a Certificate of Journalism.

Hilary is married to Mike Barry, who is a teacher. Mike's father is All Black rugby player Kevin Barry. Hilary and Mike have two sons together.

Hilary Barry's Career Journey

Starting in Radio

Hilary Barry began her career as a reporter for a radio station called 89.3 TODAY FM. This station is now known as More FM Wairarapa. Later, she moved to RNZ in the town of Masterton. Hilary has said that she was in charge of a busy newsroom there. She covered many different local stories, including the famous Golden Shears shearing competition.

From 1993 to 2003, she read the morning news on the radio station More FM. She also took part in their morning shows. On 9 February 2009, Hilary became the news anchor for the RadioLIVE breakfast show. This show was hosted by Marcus Lush. She stayed at RadioLive until 2016. In 2020 and 2021, Hilary co-hosted the 3 pm slot on 'The Hits'. She was covering for someone who was on maternity leave.

Moving to Television

In 1993, Hilary Barry became a news reporter for TV3 in Christchurch. She then moved to Auckland to work as a reporter for 3 News. For six years, she presented 3 News on weekends. In 2005, she became the weeknight co-anchor for 3 News with Mike McRoberts. This happened after the previous anchors, John Campbell and Carol Hirschfeld, moved to a different show.

In 2015, Hilary also joined the Paul Henry show as the news anchor. She did this while still co-anchoring 3 News, which was later renamed Newshub.

Hilary Barry unexpectedly left MediaWorks, the company that owned Newshub and the Paul Henry show, on 26 April 2016. She had worked for the company for 23 years. There were rumors that she was going to TVNZ. Her last day was Friday, 27 May 2016. Her colleague Mike McRoberts gave her a special video tribute.

On 19 September 2016, Hilary Barry and Jack Tame became the new co-hosts of Breakfast. Hilary left Breakfast in January 2018. She then joined Seven Sharp alongside Jeremy Wells, where she still works today.

Awards and Recognition

Hilary Barry has won many awards for her work.

  • In 2011 and 2019, she won the Best News or Current Affair Presenter award at the Aotearoa Film and Television Awards and NZTV Awards.
  • At the 2006 Qantas Television Awards, she was voted Favourite New Zealand Female Personality.
  • From 2012 to 2015, Hilary won TV Guide's Best on The Box award for Best Presenter.
  • She won the NZ Radio Award for Best Newsreader in 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2016.
  • In 2020, Hilary won the 'Favourite TV Personality' award at the New Zealand Television Awards.
