Hilary Ann Barry, born on December 4, 1969, is a well-known New Zealand journalist and TV star. She currently co-hosts Seven Sharp on TVNZ 1 with Jeremy Wells. Before this, she was a popular newsreader on TV3 for many years. Until 2016, she presented the 6 pm Newshub show alongside Mike McRoberts. She also read the news on the Paul Henry morning TV show. Hilary left these jobs in April 2016.

Early Life and Education

Hilary Barry went to Queen Margaret College in Wellington from 1980 to 1987. In her final year, she was the head girl. After high school, she studied at Victoria University of Wellington. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics and also completed a Certificate of Journalism.

Family Life

Hilary is married to Mike Barry. Mike is a teacher, and his father, Kevin Barry, was a famous All Black rugby player. Hilary and Mike have two sons together.

Hilary Barry's Career

Hilary Barry has had a long and successful career in both radio and television.

Radio Work

Hilary started her career as a reporter for a radio station called 89.3 TODAY FM. This station is now known as More FM Wairarapa. She then moved to RNZ in Masterton.

From 1993 to 2003, she read the morning news on the radio station More FM. She also took part in their morning shows. In 2009, Hilary became the news anchor for the RadioLIVE breakfast show, which was hosted by Marcus Lush. She stayed with RadioLive until 2016. Later, in 2020 and 2021, Hilary co-hosted the 3 pm slot on 'The Hits' radio station for a while.

Television Work

Hilary Barry became a TV3 news reporter in Christchurch in 1993. She later moved to Auckland to work as a reporter for 3 News. For six years, she presented 3 News on weekends.

Becoming a Main News Anchor

In 2005, Hilary became the weeknight co-anchor for 3 News, working alongside Mike McRoberts. This happened after the previous anchors, John Campbell and Carol Hirschfeld, moved to a different show. In 2015, Hilary also joined the Paul Henry show as the news anchor, while still co-anchoring 3 News (which was later renamed Newshub).

Leaving MediaWorks

Hilary Barry left MediaWorks, the company that owned Newshub and the Paul Henry show, on April 26, 2016. She had worked for the company for 23 years. After her departure, it was announced that Sam Hayes would take her place on Newshub at 6, and Ingrid Hipkiss would replace her on the Paul Henry show.

Moving to TVNZ

On September 19, 2016, Hilary Barry and Jack Tame became the new co-hosts of Breakfast on TVNZ. Hilary left Breakfast in January 2018 and then joined Seven Sharp alongside Jeremy Wells, where she is today.

Awards and Recognition

Hilary Barry has won many awards for her work in news and television.

  • She won the Best News or Current Affair Presenter award in 2011 and 2019.
  • In 2006, she was voted Favourite New Zealand Female Personality.
  • From 2012 to 2015, she won TV Guide's Best on The Box award for Best Presenter.
  • She also won the NZ Radio Award for Best Newsreader multiple times, in 2002, 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2016.
  • In 2020, Hilary won the 'Favourite TV Personality' award at the New Zealand Television Awards.
