History of Breakfast
Breakfast first aired on 11 August 1997 on TV One. Before it, there was a business show called Telstra Business. The first presenters of Breakfast were Susan Wood and Mike Hosking. Liz Gunn read the news, and Michael Wilson presented the business part.
Before Breakfast, Channel 2 had an early morning news service called Breakfast News. It started in November 1989. Tom Bradley was the main anchor, and Penelope Barr gave the weather. Breakfast News shared stories from overnight, a quick business summary, and weather. It began as a 30-minute show at 7 am, with a short update at 8 am.
In 1990, Breakfast News changed to five-minute updates. These aired at 7 am, 7:30 am, 8 am, and 8:30 am, often during children's shows. John Hawkesby became the anchor. Later that year, Breakfast News was stopped by TVNZ.
When Breakfast first started, it was the only show of its kind for a long time. Other TV channels didn't have similar morning shows until 2007. That's when TV3 launched Sunrise. Sunrise found it hard to compete with Breakfast. It eventually went off air in April 2010 due to money problems. This left Breakfast as the only morning news and talk show again. However, TV3 tried again with a new morning show called Firstline in 2011.
After Mike Hosking, Paul Henry became a main host for several years. He was known for being very outspoken. He resigned in October 2010 after making some comments on air. Years later, Paul Henry had his own breakfast show on TV3. This made the competition for Breakfast much stronger from 2015. Because of this, Breakfast was relaunched in September 2016. It got new presenters, including Hilary Barry and Jack Tame. Hilary Barry later moved to another show called Seven Sharp in 2018. Hayley Holt took her place on Breakfast. Jack Tame stayed until 2019. He then became the presenter for Q+A. John Campbell, a well-known New Zealand broadcaster, replaced him.
Between March and May 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the show had two different teams of presenters. This was due to public health rules. John Campbell hosted with Pippa Wetzell and Melissa Stokes on some days. Jenny-May Clarkson, Hadyn Jones, and Anna Burns-Francis hosted on other days. Hayley Holt was at home because she was pregnant. Matty McLean temporarily moved to present the weather for 1 News at 6 pm. From May 2020, the regular presenters returned. Jenny-May Clarkson continued as a main co-presenter while Hayley Holt was away. Hayley Holt left the show for good in August. Jenny-May Clarkson then took over her role. Indira Stewart joined the team as the newsreader. During Auckland's lockdown in 2021, the two presenting teams were John Campbell, Indira Stewart, and Melissa Stokes, and Jenny-May Clarkson, Matty McLean, and Jenny Suo.
On 31 January 2022, Breakfast got a fresh new look. This included a new studio set that used augmented reality and new graphics. Matty McLean and Indira Stewart also took on bigger roles as presenters. John Campbell left the show in April to become TVNZ's special correspondent. Kamahl Santamaria briefly replaced him. Kamahl had worked for Al Jazeera English for 16 years before this.
In May 2022, Kamahl Santamaria resigned from TVNZ after a short time. His departure led to a review of how TVNZ hired staff. Following this review, Paul Yurisich, who was in charge of news and current affairs, also resigned from his position in July 2022.

Saturday Breakfast
On 3 September 2011, TVNZ started a show called Saturday Breakfast. It aired on Saturdays from 7 am to 9 am. This show was stopped at the end of 2012 because not enough people were watching it.
How Breakfast Works
Short updates on news and sports are given every half hour. These happen at 6 am, 6:30 am, 7 am, 7:30 am, 8 am, and 8:30 am. After the news, there is a weather forecast. Most of the show includes interviews with people in the news or TVNZ reporters. They talk about the important headlines of the day. The first hour of the show, starting at 6 am, usually focuses on news. The rest of the show has fun or special interest segments.
Awards for Breakfast
In 2014, TVNZ received a Bravo award from the New Zealand Skeptics. This was for their reporting on the "dangers of Miracle Mineral Solution". They also got the award for saying that MMS "is not a miracle cure for anything."
