Anishinaabe Scout Status
Anishinaabe Scout

The Anishinaabe Scout is a special statue located in Ottawa, Canada. You can find it in Major's Hill Park. But this statue wasn't always there. It has an interesting history!

The Story of the Anishinaabe Scout

The Anishinaabe Scout statue was first part of a larger monument. This monument was dedicated to Samuel de Champlain, an important explorer. The main Champlain monument is located across the road in Nepean Point park.

How the Statue Was Made

A sculptor named Hamilton MacCarthy created the Champlain monument in 1915. A few years later, in 1918, MacCarthy made the bronze statue of a kneeling "Indian Scout." He first imagined the scout kneeling in a canoe. However, there wasn't enough money to build the canoe. So, only the "Indian Scout" statue was placed at the bottom of Champlain's monument.

A New Home and Name

In the 1990s, the Assembly of First Nations felt the scout's position was disrespectful. They believed it showed the scout in a way that was not fair or equal. They successfully asked for the statue to be moved from the Champlain monument. The statue was then renamed Anishinaabe Scout. Today, it sits in Major's Hill Park, not far from its original spot. This new location gives the statue its own important place.
