Early Life and Studies
Anita Pallenberg was born in Rome, Italy, on April 6, 1942. Her father, Arnold Pallenberg, was a sales agent, singer, and painter. Her mother, Paula Wiederhold, worked as an embassy secretary. Because of World War II, her family was separated, and she did not meet her father until she was three years old. Later, her father sent her to a boarding school in Germany so she could learn the language. Anita became fluent in four languages at a young age.
When she was 16, Anita left school. She spent time in Rome with a group of artists and then moved to New York City. There, she joined Andy Warhol's famous art studio, known as The Factory. After that, she started her career as a fashion model in Paris. Anita also studied medicine, art restoration, and graphic design, but she did not finish any of these degrees. Before settling in London, she lived in Germany, Rome, and New York City. In New York, she was part of the Living Theatre group and acted in a play called Paradise Now.
Her Work in Film and Fashion
Anita Pallenberg acted in more than a dozen films over 40 years. One of her first roles was as the Great Tyrant in the science fiction movie Barbarella (1968). However, another actress provided her character's voice. She also played a role in the German crime movie A Degree of Murder (1967). The music for this film was created by Brian Jones.
Other films she appeared in include the popular movie Candy (1968) and Performance (1970). Performance was filmed in 1968, but the studio waited to release it. Anita also appeared in a documentary about the Rolling Stones called Sympathy for the Devil (1968). This film was directed by the French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard.
In 1985, the band Duran Duran used a clip of Anita from Barbarella in their music video for "Wild Boys." Later, she played "The Queen" in the movie Mister Lonely (2007) and a character named Sin in Go Go Tales (2007).
In the 1990s, Anita went back to school to study fashion. She earned a degree in fashion and textiles from Central Saint Martins in London in 1994. However, she decided not to work in the fashion industry, finding it too competitive.
Her Time with the Rolling Stones
Anita Pallenberg is well-known for her close connections with members of the Rolling Stones. She first met the band in 1965 in Munich, Germany, where she was working as a model. Brian Jones, who spoke German, became friends with her, and they had a relationship for two years. She ended her relationship with Jones in 1967.
After that, she began a relationship with Keith Richards that lasted until 1980. They never married. Anita was busy raising their two young children while Keith was often busy with the band. Even after they separated in 1981, Keith Richards said he still cared for Anita.
There were also rumors that Anita had a brief connection with Mick Jagger while they were filming Performance. Keith Richards mentioned this in his book, Life. However, Anita herself denied these rumors in interviews.
Her Influence on the Band
Anita Pallenberg had a big impact on the Rolling Stones. Her relationship with Brian Jones helped him feel more confident and try new things with music. This happened while the band was recording their 1966 album, Aftermath. Anita was smart and sophisticated, which impressed the other band members.
Mick Jagger respected her opinions so much that some songs on the album Beggars Banquet were remixed after she gave her feedback. On the 2002 album Forty Licks, Anita Pallenberg is even credited for singing background vocals on the song "Sympathy for the Devil."
Anita also spent a lot of time with Marianne Faithfull, who was Mick Jagger's girlfriend in the late 1960s. They remained friends. They even appeared together in an episode of the TV show Absolutely Fabulous in 2001.
Personal Life and Family
Anita Pallenberg and Keith Richards had three children together. Their son, Marlon Leon Sundeep, was born on August 10, 1969. Their daughter, Dandelion Angela (who goes by Angela), was born on April 17, 1972. They also had a son named Tara Jo Jo Gunne, who was born on March 26, 1976, but sadly passed away ten weeks later. His death was caused by SIDS or pneumonia.
After Tara Jo Jo's death, Keith's mother took Angela to live with her. Anita raised Marlon mostly while traveling with the band. She taught him to read and write. When Marlon was eight, she moved to a house on Long Island, New York, so he could have a more regular life and go to school. In her later years, Anita lived mainly in Chelsea, London, and spent winters in Jamaica.
