Origin Southern Korea

Anjeunbaengi wheat, also known as Jinju native wheat, is a special type of wheat that comes from southern South Korea. This wheat is known for being very strong and growing quite quickly.

Growing Anjeunbaengi Wheat

Anjeunbaengi wheat mostly grows in the southern parts of South Korea. The warmer weather there helps the plants grow better than in the colder north.

How Tall Does It Grow?

The stalks of this wheat are quite short. They are usually only about 50 to 80 centimeters (about 20 to 31 inches) tall.

When Is It Planted and Harvested?

Farmers plant the new wheat crop in late October or early November. The next summer, the wheat can be double cropped with rice. This means farmers can grow two different crops on the same land in one year. The wheat is ready to be harvested in June.

A Change in Farming

In 1984, the South Korean government stopped helping farmers grow wheat. This kind of help is called a subsidy. When the government stopped these payments, it became harder for farmers to make money from wheat. Because of this, Anjeunbaengi wheat became less common.

What Anjeunbaengi Wheat Is Like

The small grains, or "berries," of this wheat are red. People say they taste sweet and have a nice smell.

Low in Gluten

Anjeunbaengi wheat is naturally low in gluten. Gluten is a type of protein found in many grains. It helps dough become stretchy. Because this wheat is low in gluten, it's often used to make Korean wheat noodles and dumplings.
