Ann Pitt's Early Life
Ann Pitt was born in 1718. Her mother's name was Elizabeth. Her father, John, worked at London Bridge and sold fish. Ann's brother, Cecil, became very wealthy later in life. But Ann chose a different path. She became an actress, specializing in funny roles.
Her first known performance was in 1745. She appeared in a play at the famous Drury Lane theatre in London.
Joining Covent Garden
In 1752, Ann Pitt joined the acting company at the Covent Garden Theatre. This was another very important theatre in London.
Ann Pitt's Family
Ann Pitt had two daughters. Her first daughter, Harriet Pitt, was born around 1748. At that time, Ann was acting in Richmond, Surrey. Her second daughter, Mary Ann, was born in 1759. Mary Ann's father was a scene painter named John Inigo Richards. Even though he later married someone else, he always recognized Mary Ann as his daughter. He even left her a special snuff box with Ann Pitt's picture on it in his will.
Career Highlight
In 1776, a special picture was made of Ann Pitt. It showed her playing the character Mrs Wishfort in a play called The Way of the World. This play was written by William Congreve. The picture was an engraving made by an artist named Daniel Dodd. Playing Mrs Wishfort was a big moment in Ann Pitt's career. It was one of the roles she was most proud of.
Retirement and Death
Ann Pitt stopped acting in 1792. After she retired, she went to live with her daughter in Islington, a part of London. She passed away in London in 1799 from natural causes. She was buried in Islington in a burial plot that belonged to her grandson, Charles Isaac Mungo Dibdin.
