Her Life and Music

Ann Valentine was born in Leicester on January 11, 1762. She grew up in a family where music was very important.

A Musical Family

Ann's father, John Valentine, was a composer, music teacher, and musician. He played the viola. He even performed in special concerts in London in 1784. These concerts were held to remember the famous composer George Frederic Handel.

Ann's brother, Thomas Valentine, was also a musician. He played the violin in the same concerts as his father. Ann's uncle, Henry Valentine, played the oboe and owned a music shop.

Ann's younger sister, Sarah, was also an organist. She played at St Martin's Church in Leicester starting in 1800. Sarah also wrote music, including a piece called The British March and Quickstep for the Pianoforte.

Ann's Musical Journey

Ann Valentine started performing at a young age. When she was fifteen, in 1777, she played the harpsichord in a family concert.

Around 1785, Ann became the organist at St Margaret's Church in Leicester. She held this important job for many years, until at least 1834.

In 1790, Ann published her own music. It was a collection of ten sonatas. These pieces were written for the harpsichord or piano, and could be played with a violin or flute. She continued to publish more music throughout her life. Today, we can still enjoy her ten sonatas and a special arrangement of a dance tune called Monny Musk.
