Anna Goldenberg is a talented computer scientist who was born in Russia. She is now a full professor at the University of Toronto in both the Computer Science and Statistics departments. She also works as a senior scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children's Research Institute. On top of that, she is the Associate Research Director for health at the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence. Anna Goldenberg is the very first person to hold the chair in biomedical informatics and artificial intelligence at the Hospital for Sick Children. This means she leads the way in using computers and smart technology to help kids' health.

Early Life and Education

Anna Goldenberg grew up in Voronezh, Russia. When she was a young child, she faced some unfair treatment at school because of her background. Because of these challenges, her family decided to leave Russia in 1995. Anna was 17 years old at the time.

Moving to the U.S.

Her family moved to Kentucky, U.S.A.. There, Anna went to the University of Louisville. She earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree, focusing on Engineering Mathematics and Computer Science.

Graduate Studies

After her undergraduate studies, Anna continued her education. She completed a Master's degree in Knowledge Discovery & Data Mining. Then, she earned a PhD in machine learning from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Her PhD research looked at how to use computer models to understand large social groups.

Research Career

In 2008, Anna Goldenberg moved to Canada. She started as a post-doctoral fellow, which is like a special researcher after you finish your PhD.

Current Roles

Today, she is an associate professor at the University of Toronto. She teaches in both the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Statistics. She is also a scientist at the Hospital for Sick Children's Research Institute.

Helping Patients with Machine Learning

Anna's laboratory focuses on how machine learning can help doctors. They use computers to find patterns in patient data. This helps them understand different types of human diseases better. Their goal is to improve how patients are treated and how well they recover.

Her research group created a special method called Similarity Network Fusion. This method helps combine different types of patient information. It has improved predictions for how well people with various cancers might do. Anna has published over 50 papers in scientific journals. Her work has been mentioned by other scientists more than 2,000 times.

Important Appointments

In 2017, Anna Goldenberg was given a special title. She became a Tier 2 CIHR-funded Canada Research Chair in Computational Medicine at the University of Toronto. This is a big honor for researchers in Canada.

On January 15, 2019, Anna Goldenberg made history. She was named the first chair in biomedical informatics and artificial intelligence at the Hospital for Sick Children. This is the first position of its kind in any Canadian children's hospital. A generous donation of $1.75 million from a Toronto entrepreneur helped fund this important role.
