Her Family and Early Life

Anna Maria Chetwode was born in County Cork, Ireland. Her father was Reverend John Chetwode. He was a church leader in Glanmire. Her mother was Elizabeth Chetwode. Anna Maria's grandfather, Knightley Chetwode, was a friend of the famous writer Jonathan Swift. Her father also wrote poetry, but his works were never published.

Anna Maria Chetwode lived in Glanmire in 1821. She also traveled quite a bit. In the early 1800s, she visited Russia. She stayed near Moscow with a noblewoman named Yekaterina Vorontsova-Dashkova. Anna Maria was also connected to the well-known sisters Katherine and Martha. This was through her sister Elizabeth Hester's marriage.

Her Writings

Anna Maria Chetwode wrote at least three novels. People believe she might have written even more. Two of her books are Blue-stocking Hall (published in 1827) and Tales of my time (published in 1829). For a while, these books were thought to be written by someone else. But in 1839, an Irish historian named John Windele confirmed Anna Maria Chetwode was the true author.

Blue-stocking Hall is a special kind of novel. It is written as a series of letters. The story takes place in County Kerry, Ireland. This book strongly supported the idea of women getting a good education. Another book called Snugborough is also thought to be one of her works.

Anna Maria Chetwode also wrote poems. Some of her poems can be found in the Wilmot family papers. These papers are kept at the Royal Irish Academy. One of her poems was written to remember Thomas Addis Emmet. He was an important Irish figure.
