Anna Nalick's Early Life and Music Journey

Anna Nalick was born and grew up in Temple City, California. She went to Holy Angels Grammar School in Arcadia. When she was 14, she moved to Glendora, California with her family. Her family has a history in music; two of her grandparents performed on Broadway. Her parents also introduced her to many different artists, like Elvis Presley and Led Zeppelin.

Anna remembers being in fifth grade math class and rewriting the words to a Cranberries song instead of listening to the teacher. She says she gets ideas for her music from poetry, books, psychology, and history. Her musical tastes are very wide, from old-time ragtime music to folk and trip-hop.

Nalick also remembers showing her singing talent to her third-grade teacher. The teacher told her she would one day be on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Years later, in 2005, Anna did perform on The Tonight Show. She made sure to invite that same teacher to be in the audience!

Anna first planned to go to college before becoming a musician. She kept recording her songs on a simple cassette recorder. But then she met a professor who knew someone with parents in the music business. Anna shared a simple six-song demo tape. Soon, she met Christopher Thorn and Brad Smith from the band Blind Melon. They were now working as music producers. She also met Eric Rosse, who was known for working with Tori Amos.

In October 2003, Anna decided to put her college plans on hold. She signed a contract with Columbia Records. She went into the studio with Thorn, Smith, and Rosse to make her first album. They worked with a mix engineer named Mark Endert. She also recorded with many talented musicians. Her album, Wreck of the Day, was released two years later.
