A Historic Building in Anna, Ohio
The Anna Town Hall stands out because it's made of brick. Most other buildings in Anna were originally built from wood. This makes the town hall's sturdy brick design quite unique and noticeable in the village.
Early Days of Anna Village
People first started settling near what is now Anna in 1833. But the actual village of Anna began about 25 years later. In 1858, a landowner named John W. Carey planned out the village. He named it "Anna" after his daughter, Anna Carey.
Why a Town Hall Was Needed
The village of Anna officially became a town in 1877. This meant it needed its own government and a place for it to operate. So, the community decided to build the town hall you see today. It was built on the main road that connected the canal town of Minster to a train line.
A Place for the Community
The Anna Town Hall was designed to serve many purposes for the people of Anna:
- Village Offices: This is where the village leaders worked and made decisions.
- Fire Station: It housed the equipment and volunteers who protected the village from fires.
- Jail: A small area was set aside to hold people who broke the law.
- Community Theater: This space was used for plays, meetings, and other fun events for everyone.
Recognized for its History
The Anna Town Hall is important because of its role in local history. It's also a great example of well-preserved old architecture. Because of its special place in the community, the Anna Town Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This list recognizes buildings and places that are important to the history of the United States.
