The Annandale Post Office (postcode: 2038) is an important building located at 115-117 Booth Street in Annandale, a suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is a place where people can send and receive mail. This post office is owned and run by Australia Post, which is a government agency.

History of the Annandale Post Office

People in Annandale started asking for a local post office way back in 1891. They wanted a proper building to handle their mail. By 1894, local leaders spoke to William Mahony, who was their representative in government. They asked him to help get money for the new building.

Building Design and Construction

The Annandale Post Office was built between 1895 and 1896. It was designed by Walter Liberty Vernon, who was the main architect for the New South Wales government at the time. The building shows off a style called Federation Free Classical.

This style uses classic design ideas but in a more relaxed way. The post office is made from strong materials like brick, Sydney sandstone, and timber. Its roof is covered with red terracotta tiles.

Special Features of the Building

The post office is a two-storey building with many cool details. You can see a covered walkway, called a colonnade or portico, at the front. It has large stone pillars that are partly square columns.

Look closely and you'll spot special bricks used to make the many arches. There are also horizontal bands that match the stone window sills. The roof has several pointed sections called gable ends. Its edges stick out and show off decorative timber pieces.

On the side facing Johnston Street, the ground floor has a rounded bay window in the middle. This window has two parts that slide up and down. On either side of the bay window are single windows that also slide up and down. The top parts of these windows have many small glass panes.

The Annandale Post Office has been open and serving the community since it was first built.
