Lady Anne Elizabeth Cowdrey (born Fitzalan-Howard; 12 June 1938 – 23 November 2014) was a British racehorse trainer. She also held a special noble title, the 14th Lady Herries of Terregles.

Early Life and Family History

Anne Elizabeth Fitzalan-Howard was born on 12 June 1938. She was the oldest of four daughters. Her parents were Bernard Fitzalan-Howard, 16th Duke of Norfolk and Lavinia Strutt.

Anne had three younger sisters: Mary, Sarah, and Jane. Mary later became the 15th Lady Herries of Terregles. Jane is currently the 16th Lady Herries of Terregles.

Anne grew up at her family's home, Arundel Castle, in West Sussex. She went to school at the Priory School in Arundel. She also studied at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Woldingham.

Becoming a Racehorse Trainer

From 1970 to 1979, Anne lived in Everingham, Yorkshire. There, she was a "Master of Foxhounds" for the Middleton Hunt. This was a traditional role in charge of a group that hunted foxes.

In 1983, she started training racehorses. She worked from the Angmering Park estate in Sussex. This estate is near Arundel, on the South Downs.

Anne trained racehorses for over 30 years. One of the most famous horses she trained was Celtic Swing. This horse won important races like the Racing Post Trophy. Celtic Swing was named the best two-year-old horse in 1994.

She also had success with a horse named Sheriff's Star. This horse won the King Edward VII Stakes and the Coronation Cup. Another horse, Taufan's Melody, won the Caulfield Cup in Australia in 1998. She also trained Set Point, which won several races in the 1970s.

Her Noble Title

When her father passed away in 1975, he did not have any sons. As the oldest daughter, Lady Anne inherited a Scottish noble title. She became the 14th Lady Herries of Terregles.

Her father's other titles, like the Dukedom, went to his male heir. From 1975 until 1999, Lady Anne could have been a member of the House of Lords. This is part of the UK Parliament. However, she chose not to take her seat there.

Personal Life

In 1985, Lady Anne married Colin Cowdrey. He was a famous English cricketer. They were married until Colin passed away in 2000. Lady Anne died in 2014 at the age of 76. She passed away from pneumonia.
