Anne Hoby (born Doddington, also known as Anne Greville, Baroness Brooke) lived from around 1642 to 1690. She was an important English heiress, meaning she inherited a lot of wealth and land.
Her Early Life
Anne Doddington was born around 1642. She was the daughter of John Doddington from Breamore House. Her father was a Member of Parliament, which means he was elected to represent an area in the government. He represented Lymington. He also inherited many estates, which are large areas of land and property. One of these was the manor of South Charford.
Anne's only sister who survived was Margaret Doddington. Margaret married Sir Thomas Hannan, but they did not have any children. Anne's grandfather, Sir William Doddington, was also a Member of Parliament. He served as the High Sheriff of Hampshire, a high-ranking official in the county. Anne's family was well-connected. Her great-grandfather, Sir John Herbert, was a Secretary of State for Queen Elizabeth I and King James I.
Family and Marriages
Her First Marriage
Anne was married twice in her life. Her first husband was Robert Greville, 4th Baron Brooke. He was born around 1641 and passed away in 1676. He came from Beauchamps Court. Robert became the 4th Baron Brooke after his older brother died without marrying. When Anne married him, she became known as Baroness Brooke.
Her husband, Lord Brooke, was an important person. In 1660, he was one of six people chosen to invite King Charles II to return to England. He also served as Lord Lieutenant of Staffordshire, which was a royal representative in a county.
Anne and Robert had six sons and two daughters. Their daughters were:
- Hon. Anne Greville (around 1670–1706). She married William Pierrepont, 4th Earl of Kingston-upon-Hull.
- Hon. Doddington Greville (1671–1720). She married Charles Montagu, 1st Duke of Manchester in 1690. She became the first Duchess of Manchester.
Sadly, Lord Brooke outlived all of his six sons. When he died in 1676, his younger brother, Fulke Greville, became the 5th Baron Brooke.
Her Second Marriage
After her first husband passed away, Anne married her first cousin, Thomas Hoby. This happened sometime after 1677. After this marriage, her last name became Hoby. Thomas Hoby was also a Member of Parliament. He represented Great Marlow and Salisbury.
Anne Hoby passed away on February 3, 1690–91. She was buried on February 19, 1690–91, in Breamore, Hampshire, England. Her husband, Thomas Hoby, died in 1706.
Legacy
Through her daughter Doddington, Anne Hoby had important grandchildren. These included the 2nd Duke of Manchester and the 3rd Duke of Manchester. She was also the grandmother of Charlotte Byng, Viscountess Torrington.
