Robert Montagu, 3rd Duke of Manchester (born around 1710 – died May 10, 1762) was an important British nobleman and politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a parliament, from 1734 to 1739. After that, he became the Duke of Manchester, a high-ranking noble title.
Early Life and Family
Robert Montagu was the son of Charles Montagu, 1st Duke of Manchester. His mother was Dodington Greville. Robert had an older brother, William Montagu, 2nd Duke of Manchester. He also had sisters, including Lady Charlotte Montagu.
His family was well-known in British society. His grandfather, Charles Montagu, was made the first Duke of Manchester by King George I in 1719. This meant the family held a very important noble rank.
Robert's Political Journey
Robert Montagu followed in his family's footsteps in politics. He became a MP for Huntingdonshire in 1734. An MP is someone elected to represent an area in the House of Commons. He belonged to the Whig political group.
In 1739, his older brother, William, passed away without any children. This meant Robert inherited the title and became the 3rd Duke of Manchester. Because he became a Duke, he had to leave his seat in the House of Commons.
Important Roles and Duties
As a Duke, Robert Montagu held several important positions. From 1739 to 1762, he was the Lord-Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire. This role meant he was the King's or Queen's representative in that county.
He also served in the royal household. From 1735 to 1737, he was a Vice-Chamberlain to the Queen. Later, from 1739 to 1761, he was a Lord of the Bedchamber. This was a close attendant to the King. Finally, from 1761 until his death, he was the Lord Chamberlain to Queen Charlotte. This was a very senior position in the royal household.
Family Life
On April 3, 1735, Robert Montagu married Harriet Dunch. She was the daughter of Edmund Dunch. Together, Robert and Harriet had four children:
- George Montagu, 4th Duke of Manchester (1737–1788): He later became the 4th Duke. He married Elizabeth Dashwood.
- Lord Charles Greville Montagu (1741–1783): He married Elizabeth Bulmer.
- Lady Caroline Montagu (died 1818): She married Charles Herbert.
- Lady Louisa Montagu: She never married.
Robert Montagu, the 3rd Duke of Manchester, passed away on May 10, 1762. He was remembered for his public service and his family's important place in British history.
