Anne Harper Charity Hudley is an American expert who studies how people use language, especially in schools. She helps us understand the different ways English is spoken and how that affects students. Since 2021, she has been a professor at Stanford University.

Her Early Life and Schooling
Anne Harper Charity Hudley grew up in Richmond, Virginia. She went to St. Catherine's School there for 13 years. She then studied at Harvard University for her first college degree. Later, she earned her Ph.D. (a high-level degree) in linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania in 2005.
Her Work and Research
Teaching at Universities
From 2005 to 2017, Professor Charity Hudley taught at the College of William and Mary. She was a professor of education, English, and linguistics. She also helped lead a program for college students called WMSURE. This program supported students in their studies. She was also involved with programs about African American studies and women's studies.
After William and Mary, she taught at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2021, she moved to Stanford University. She is now a professor at the Stanford University Graduate School of Education. She also helps lead the Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL).
What She Studies
Professor Charity Hudley's main research looks at how language is used in American classrooms. She studies how different ways of speaking relate to things like race and ethnicity. She also looks at how language affects how well students learn.
Her work aims to share knowledge about sociolinguistics with teachers. Sociolinguistics is the study of how language connects to society. She helps us understand how reading, different dialects (ways of speaking), and individual language habits all work together.
Leadership in Linguistics
Professor Charity Hudley has also been a leader in the Linguistic Society of America. This is a big group for language experts. From 2009 to 2016, she helped with programs for college students. She also worked on making the field of linguistics more diverse.
