Anne Lester Hudson (born January 30, 1932, died January 02, 2025) was an American mathematician. She was also a great teacher who helped others learn math. She was very good at solving tough math problems. Anne Hudson coached students who won big math contests. These included the International Mathematical Olympiad and the William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. She was a professor at Georgia Southern University-Armstrong Campus.

Early Life and Learning

Anne Lester Hudson was born Anne Lester. She grew up in Mississippi, in a small town called Inverness, Mississippi. Her high school class had only seven students.

College Years

She went to Hollins College for her first degree. There, she had a special teacher named Herta Freitag. Anne stayed at Hollins for four years, which was unusual then. She wanted to keep learning from Ms. Freitag. Anne graduated from Hollins College in 1953.

Advanced Studies

In 1961, Anne Hudson earned her Ph.D. in mathematics. She got this advanced degree from Tulane University. At Tulane, she met her husband, Sigmund Hudson, who was also a mathematician. Her Ph.D. paper was about "Topological Semigroups." Anne Hudson was the first woman to get a doctorate in math from Tulane University.

Career in Mathematics

After finishing her studies, Anne Hudson received special funding. This funding came from the National Science Foundation and NATO.

Teaching and Research

She became a professor at Syracuse University. In 1966, she earned tenure there for her research. This meant she had a permanent job. In 1971, she moved to Armstrong State College in Georgia. She wanted to focus more on teaching college students.

Coaching Math Olympiads

In 1994, Anne Hudson led the United States Math Olympiad Program. This program trained the U.S. team for the International Mathematical Olympiad. She traveled to Hong Kong as the team's coach. Under her guidance, the U.S. team won the Olympiad that year.

Awards and Honors

Anne Hudson received many awards for her work.

  • In 1993, she was one of the first people to win the Deborah and Franklin Haimo Awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics. This award is given by the Mathematical Association of America.
  • The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching named her an "Outstanding Professor of the Year" in 1996.
  • The Georgia House of Representatives gave her a special award in 1997.
  • Hollins College also honored her with their outstanding alumna award.
