Anne Murray, Duchess of Atholl VA (born Anne Home-Drummond) was a Scottish noblewoman. She was born on 17 June 1814 and passed away on 22 May 1897. She was a very close friend and trusted helper to Queen Victoria for many years.

Early Life and Marriage

Anne Home-Drummond was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her father was Henry Home-Drummond. Her mother was Christian Moray.

On 29 October 1839, Anne married George Murray. At that time, he was known as the 2nd Baron Glenlyon. When they married, Anne became known as Lady Glenlyon. In 1846, her husband became the 6th Duke of Atholl. This meant Anne then became the Duchess of Atholl.

A Friend to Queen Victoria

The Duchess of Atholl held important roles in Queen Victoria's royal household. In 1852, she served as the Mistress of the Robes. This was a very important position. The person in this role helped the Queen with her official clothes and duties.

After this, she became a Lady of the Bedchamber. She held this role for almost 40 years. A Lady of the Bedchamber was a close personal attendant and friend to the Queen. Anne Murray was one of Queen Victoria's most trusted friends. When Prince Albert, the Queen's husband, passed away, Queen Victoria turned to the Duchess for comfort.

In 1864, the Duke of Atholl died. Anne then became known as the Dowager Duchess of Atholl. This title meant she was the widowed Duchess. Even after her husband's death, she continued to serve the Queen.

Later, in 1892, there was a political disagreement in Britain. Many noble ladies did not want to take on the role of Mistress of the Robes. Because of this, the Dowager Duchess of Atholl continued to help with the duties of that office. The Duchess and her husband preferred to spell their title and home as Athole instead of Atholl.

Family and Later Years

The Duke and Duchess of Atholl had one child together. His name was John Stewart-Murray, 7th Duke of Atholl.

The Duchess of Atholl lived to be 82 years old. She passed away in May 1897 in Dunkeld, Perthshire. She was buried in Blair Atholl.
