Annette O'Toole (born Annette Toole on April 1, 1952) is a talented American actress, singer, and songwriter. She is famous for playing many different characters on TV and in movies. You might know her as Martha Kent, Superman's adoptive mother, in the TV series Smallville. She also played Lana Lang in the movie Superman III. Another well-known role was the adult Beverly Marsh in the 1990 TV mini-series It, based on Stephen King's scary novel.

Early Life and First Steps in Acting
Annette O'Toole was born in Houston, Texas. Her mother, Dorothy, was a dance teacher. Annette started learning to dance when she was only three years old! When she was 13, her family moved to Los Angeles. This is where she began taking acting lessons.
Annette O'Toole's Acting Career
Annette O'Toole started her acting journey on television in 1967. She appeared on The Danny Kaye Show. After that, she had guest roles on many popular shows. These included My Three Sons, The Virginian, Gunsmoke, and Hawaii Five-O.
Early Film and TV Roles
Her first big movie role was in the 1975 film Smile. She played a beauty pageant contestant. She even got the part by doing a funny impression of a "dead cockroach" at her audition! In 1977, she was in One on One. She played a tutor and girlfriend to the main character.
In the early 1980s, Annette starred in several projects. She was in the 1980 film Foolin' Around with Gary Busey. In 1981, she played country music star Tammy Wynette in the TV movie Stand By Your Man. She also had a small role in the 1982 movie 48 Hrs.. That same year, she appeared in Cat People.
Playing Lana Lang and Martha Kent
A very famous role for Annette O'Toole was playing Lana Lang in Superman III in 1983. Lana Lang was a love interest for Clark Kent (Superman). Years later, in 2001, Annette returned to the Superman world. This time, she played Martha Kent, Superman's kind adoptive mother, in the TV series Smallville. She was a main character on the show for six seasons. She even came back for a few more episodes in later seasons!

Annette O'Toole continued to work on many TV movies and series. In 1985, she starred with Barry Manilow in the TV movie Copacabana. She also played Ms. Edmunds in the original 1985 film Bridge to Terabithia. In 1987, she had a leading role in the romantic comedy Cross My Heart.
In 1990, she played two important roles in TV mini-series. She was the adult Beverly Marsh in Stephen King's It. She also played Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy in The Kennedys of Massachusetts. This role earned her an Emmy nomination! She later starred in the 1992 mini-series Jewels.
Annette also had a recurring role on the TV show Nash Bridges starting in 1996. She then starred in her own series, The Huntress, in 2000. In this show, she played a female bounty hunter. Annette O'Toole was married to actor Bill Geisslinger from 1983 to 1993. They have two daughters together. In March 1999, Annette married actor and musician Michael McKean. She became a stepmother to his two sons. Annette and Michael often work together on music projects.
