Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Annie Mikpiga (1900–1984) was a talented Inuit artist from Nunavik, a region in Quebec, Canada. She was known for her amazing prints, which are now displayed in many public art galleries and museums across Canada.

Her Life and Art

Annie Mikpiga was born in 1900 in a place called Akua, close to Puvirnituq in Nunavik. She lived there her whole life until she passed away in 1984.

Annie Mikpiga was one of the very first Inuit artists to try out printmaking. This is a special way of making art by transferring an image from one surface to another. From the 1960s to the early 1970s, she created about 60 unique pieces using a method called "stone-cut." This means she carved her designs into stone, then used the stone to make prints.

In 1973, when she was the oldest person there, Annie Mikpiga took part in a special workshop in Puvirnituq. It was about "batik," which is a way of making patterns on fabric using wax and dye.

Her beautiful artworks are now part of important collections. You can find them in places like the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian Museum of History, and the Winnipeg Art Gallery. Her art is also at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec and the Musée de la civilisation. Even outside Canada, her work is shown at the Museum Cerny in Bern, Switzerland.
