Annie Morrill Smith (born February 13, 1856 – died November 11, 1946) was an American scientist. She was a botanist, which means she studied plants. Annie was also a bryologist, focusing on tiny plants like mosses.

She was mostly self-taught, meaning she learned a lot on her own. Annie became very important to a group called the Sullivant Moss Society. For several years, she was the main editor of their magazine, The Bryologist. She also wrote important books about family histories.

Early Life and Discovering Plants

Annie Elizabeth Morrill was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents were Cynthia Langdon and Dr. Henry Edwin Morrill. She went to school at the Packer Collegiate Institute.

In 1880, she married Hugh Montgomery Smith, who was a doctor. Sadly, he passed away in 1897. When she was younger, Annie studied plants while traveling abroad. This is when she became very interested in bryophytes (like mosses and liverworts) and lichens.

Helping the Sullivant Moss Society

Annie knew Elizabeth Gertrude Britton and Abel Joel Grout. They were the people who started the Sullivant Moss Society. After her husband died, Annie became an associate editor for The Bryologist. This was the magazine published by the Society.

In 1905, she became the main editor of the magazine. She worked in this role until 1911. During this time, she used a lot of her own money to help the Society. This kept the group going strong. She also served as the treasurer for 10 years, managing the Society's money. Annie was also vice president for seven years and president for two years.

Writing Family Histories

Besides her work with plants, Annie Morrill Smith also wrote several books about family histories. These books are called genealogical books. One book was From One Generation To Another (1906), which was about the Langdon family.

She also wrote Morrill Kindred in America (1914) about the Morrill family. Her book Ancestors of Henry Montgomery Smith and Catherine Forshee (1921) covered other family lines. Annie Morrill Smith is buried at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
