Annis is a small, unincorporated community in Jefferson County, Idaho, United States. It is located about 4 miles (6.4 km) north-northeast of Rigby. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's governed by the county.
How Annis Got Its Name
The first people settled in Annis in 1879. The community is named after Ann Kearney, who was the first postmistress there. The name "Annis" also includes the first letters of the word "island."
There is a story about how "Ann Island" became "Annis." A special plaque at the old "Annis Little Butte Cemetery," now called "Little Butte Cemetery," shares part of the history. It says that in March 1879, pioneers came to the area. The first public building was a log post office and home belonging to James and Anna Kearney. They would cross the "Dry Bed Channel" of the Snake River to bring mail to their central spot. This place became known as "Annie's Place." The Kearneys asked for postal service in 1886, and it was granted in 1896, but with the name "Annis." This plaque was put up by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers in 1982.
