History of Anola
The land where Anola is located was traditionally home to the Anishnaabe and Swampy Cree First Nations. These are Indigenous peoples of Canada. In 1870, this area became part of the new province of Manitoba.
Treaty 1 and Early Settlement
In 1871, Treaty 1 was signed between the British Crown and the First Nations. This agreement allowed for new settlements in southern Manitoba. This included farming communities in the Anola area.
How Anola Got Its Name
In 1907, the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway became interested in the area. Land was sold, and a village called Free Port was created. The name changed to Anola in 1912.
The Canadian government once said that "Anola" was an "invented name." They thought this because the local post office, called Richland Post Office, used to serve the area. People there didn't know why it was named Anola.
Some local stories suggest the name comes from the area's slightly higher ground. It's on a small hill, or "a knoll." This might have led to the name Anola.
Another idea is that Anola was named after the wife of a railway official. This theory makes sense because other nearby towns, like Elma, Hazel, and Vivian, also have women's first names. These towns were named around the same time. It's possible they were all named after the official's daughters or other family members.

Anola has a school for students from kindergarten to grade 8. The school offers many programs. These include French language classes, band, music, and choir. Students can also learn life skills and take part in sports.
Anola is also home to The 10 Acre Woods. This is a special place where you can visit a petting farm. It is also an animal rescue center.
In 2019, Canada Post updated the postal system for Anola. This changed the postal code for addresses in the area. Anola addresses moved from a rural postal code (R0E 0A0) to a new system (R5L).
