The African butterfly cichlid (scientific name: Anomalochromis thomasi) is a small, colorful fish. It belongs to the Cichlidae family, which includes many popular aquarium fish. This fish is the only species in its group, called a genus.
African butterfly cichlids are quite small. They usually grow to be about 6 to 8 centimeters (2.4 to 3.1 inches) long. They are known for their interesting behaviors, especially how they care for their young.
Where They Live
African butterfly cichlids come from West Africa. You can find them in countries like Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea. They mostly live in small streams.
These streams are often in forests. The water is usually a bit acidic and has lots of oxygen. It can look like tea because of natural plant matter. In the dry season, the water in these streams can get quite warm, up to about 30°C (86°F).
Interesting Behaviors
African butterfly cichlids have some cool habits. If they feel scared or bothered, they can quickly bury themselves in the mud. They can even dig down about 30 centimeters (12 inches) deep!
Raising a Family
These fish are very dedicated parents. They form pairs to have babies. The female fish chooses a good spot, like a leaf or a flat rock. She and the male clean this spot carefully.
After the eggs are laid, the female usually takes care of them. Sometimes the male helps out too. Once the eggs hatch, the tiny baby fish are moved. Their parents dig small holes in the mud and move the babies between these pits. They do this for about three days until the young fish are strong enough to swim on their own.
Why the Name?
The scientific name thomasi was given to this fish to honor someone special. It was named after W. Thomas, an English aquatic technician. He was the person who first collected this type of fish in 1965.
