Anonymous works are creations like art, books, or music made by someone whose name is not known. Sometimes, the person who made the work chooses to keep their identity a secret. Other times, their name might be unknown because it was lost over time, or they couldn't share it for legal reasons.

For example, in 2007, a newspaper called The Washington Post published an article by a writer who chose to remain anonymous. This writer couldn't reveal their name because of certain laws. They would have liked to be named, but it wasn't allowed.

Some very old works of art or writing are also anonymous. This often happens because the creator's name was simply forgotten over many years. In these cases, historians might refer to the unknown author as "Anonymus," which is a Latin word meaning "anonymous." In the United States, an anonymous work is officially defined as something where no person is named as the author on the copies.

What Are Anonymous Works?

Anonymous works are pieces of art, literature, or other creative items where the creator's name is not known. This means the artist, writer, or musician has not put their name on the work. People might wonder why someone would choose not to be known for their creations.

Why Do People Create Anonymous Works?

There are several reasons why a creator might choose to be anonymous.

  • Keeping a secret: Some artists or writers simply prefer to keep their identity private. They might want their work to speak for itself, without people focusing on who they are.
  • Legal reasons: In some situations, a person might be legally prevented from sharing their name. This could be to protect their safety or to follow rules about sensitive information.
  • Protecting ideas: Sometimes, people want to share ideas or information without their personal identity getting in the way. This allows the message to be the main focus.

When Creators Are Unknown

Not all anonymous works are made by choice. For very old or ancient creations, the name of the person who made it might simply be lost to history. Imagine a beautiful painting from hundreds of years ago. If no one wrote down who painted it, that artist becomes unknown to us today. Historians try their best to find out who made these works, but sometimes it's just not possible.
