Another Place (sculpture) facts for kids
Another Place is a special art project by Sir Antony Gormley. It's a collection of 100 sculptures found at Crosby Beach in Merseyside, England. These sculptures are made from cast iron and all face out towards the sea. Each one is a copy of the artist's own body.
The sculptures were first shown in other places. They arrived at Crosby Beach on July 1, 2005. At first, there was some discussion about whether they should stay. But on March 7, 2007, the local council decided the sculptures would stay on the beach forever.
What is Another Place?
The art project features 100 figures made from heavy cast iron. They are spread out along about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) of beach between Waterloo and Blundellsands. Each figure stands about 189 centimeters (6 feet 2 inches) tall. They are also very heavy, weighing around 650 kilograms (1,433 pounds) each!
The figures are exact copies of Antony Gormley's own body. As the ocean's tides go in and out, the figures are sometimes covered by the sea and then appear again. Because they are in the seawater, they slowly change over time. They can also become home to small sea creatures.
How the Sculptures Were Made
The figures for Another Place were created in special workshops called foundries. They were made at Hargreaves Foundry in Halifax, West Yorkshire and the Joseph and Jesse Siddons Foundry in West Bromwich. A skilled worker named Derek Alexander helped to cast them.
