Ansur's Early Life and Rise to Power
The first time we hear about Ansur is in a document from 921. It mentions him and his parents, Fernando Ansúrez and Muniadonna. They made a gift of land near Burgos to a monastery called San Pedro de Cardeña.
Ansur became a count, which was a very important title, possibly as early as 932. He might have been involved in a rebellion against King Ramiro II that year. This shows he was already a significant leader.
The Battle of Simancas
Ansur was a key participant in the famous Battle of Simancas in 939. This was a major battle where Christian forces fought against the Caliphate of Córdoba. Ansur was one of only two counts mentioned as fighting in this battle. This highlights how important he was to the king and the kingdom. His bravery in this battle likely led to him being given the county of Monzón.
Count of Monzón
Ansur was known as the Count of Monzón. The earliest clear record of him holding this title is from 943. A document from that year states that "Count Ansur Fernández" was ruling in Monzón. This document also shows that Ansur, his wife Guntroda, and their children—Fernando, Oveco, Muño, Nuño, Gutierre, Gonzalo, and Teresa—donated a village to a monastery.
Ansur as Count of Castile
King Ramiro II trusted Ansur a lot. When the king removed Fernán González from his position as Count of Castile, he appointed his own son, Sancho I, to take over. But Sancho was young, so Ansur was chosen to act as his "regent". A regent is someone who rules for a king or count when they are too young or unable to do so themselves.
Ansur ruled Castile from late 943 to late 945. Even after Fernán González was put back in charge of Castile, Ansur still held a higher rank in royal documents. This shows his continued importance to the king.
Family and Legacy
Ansur's only known daughter, Teresa, married King Ramiro II's son, Sancho I. This made her the Queen of León. Their son was Ramiro III, who later became king.
After Ansur's eldest son, Fernando, passed away in 978, the county of Monzón was inherited by Teresa and then by her son, King Ramiro III. This shows how Ansur's family continued to be powerful and important in the kingdom for many years. A document from 976 mentions that Ansur was always loyal to his king and fought bravely in many battles.
