António Francisco dos Santos (born February 21, 1948 – died September 11, 2017) was an important leader in the Catholic Church in Portugal. He served as a bishop, which is a high-ranking position in the church. He was known for his work in different areas of Portugal, including Aveiro and Porto.
About Bishop António dos Santos
António Francisco dos Santos was born in Portugal in 1948. He dedicated his life to the church from a young age. He became a priest in 1972. This was the start of his long career in religious service.
His Church Roles
Bishop Santos held several important roles during his life. Each role involved leading and guiding Catholic communities.
- From 2004 to 2006, he was an auxiliary bishop in Braga, Portugal. An auxiliary bishop helps the main bishop of a large area.
- He then became the bishop of the Diocese of Aveiro. He served there from 2006 to 2014.
- His last role was as the bishop of the Diocese of Porto. He led the church in Porto from 2014 until his death in 2017.
A Bridge Named in His Honor
After Bishop Santos passed away, the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia decided to honor him. These two cities are separated by the Douro river. They agreed to build a new bridge over the river. This bridge would be the seventh one connecting the cities.
They chose to name this new bridge the D. António Francisco dos Santos Bridge. This was a special way to remember his contributions. It shows how much he was respected in the region.
