Antero Manninen, born on January 19, 1973, is a talented Finnish cellist. His bandmates sometimes call him Mr. Cool because of his calm way of playing. He is known for being a former member of the unique Finnish band Apocalyptica. This group plays a special kind of music called cello metal.
Antero was an official member of Apocalyptica for some time. He played the cello but did not write the songs. He left the band in 1999 because he had other important things to do. However, he has often returned to help the band with their performances. When he plays live, Antero sits calmly. This is very different from the other band members who often move around a lot, even headbanging!
Besides his work with Apocalyptica, Antero has played in many other orchestras. He was a musician in the Tapiola Sinfonietta Avanti! and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra. He also played in the orchestra of the Finnish National Opera. Antero is one of the people who started the Sibelius-Academy's Cellosextet (SSS). He has even performed at funerals. Today, he is a member of the Lahti Symphony Orchestra.
What Instruments Does He Use?
Antero Manninen uses special equipment to create his music.
His Cello
- He plays a cello made by Giuseppe Pedrazzini in 1946. This is a very old and valuable instrument.
His Bow
- He uses an L. Breshnev bow. A bow is what cellists use to play the strings of their instrument.
His Strings
- For the top strings of his cello, he uses Jargar strings. Sometimes he uses Larsen strings.
- For the bottom strings, he uses Spirocore strings. These are made by Thomastik-Infeld and have Tungsten in them. Strings are very important for the sound of the cello.
