Anthea Phillipps's Plant Research
Anthea Phillipps studied plants at the University of Durham in England. After finishing her degree, she worked at the Sabah Museum. From 1980 to 1987, she worked for Sabah Parks as a Park Ecologist. In this role, she spent her time studying rhododendrons and pitcher plants in their natural homes.
Helping Sabah's Plant Collections
Anthea Phillipps played a big part in setting up the Herbarium and the Botanical Garden at Kinabalu Park. A herbarium is like a library for dried plant samples, used for scientific study. She collected many plant samples, including a type of ginger called Hornstedtia reticulata. These samples are now kept at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in Scotland. She also helped create a special section for plants at the Sabah Museum.
Books About Plants
Anthea Phillipps has written or helped write several important books about the plants of Sabah and Borneo. These books help people learn more about the amazing plant life in these regions:
- A Guide to the Parks of Sabah (1988)
- Rhododendrons of Sabah (1988) (with A. Lamb, George Argent & Sheila Collenette)
- Pitcher-Plants of Borneo (1996) (with Anthony Lamb and Chien Lee)

How Anthea Phillipps Was Honored
Anthea Phillipps has been recognized for her important work. A type of small insect called a caddisfly from the genus Gunungiella was named after her. This is a special way to honor scientists for their contributions to understanding nature.
