The Story of Anthon Berg
How Chocolate Came to Denmark
Did you know that cocoa first arrived in Denmark around the 1700s? For a long time, people thought of it more as a medicine. In fact, many of the first big chocolate makers in Denmark, like Toms, Trojel, and Meyer, were actually pharmacists!
Anthon Berg's Sweet Start
Marzipan was already a popular sweet treat in Denmark. Anthon Berg, who used to sell fruits and vegetables, decided to try making marzipan himself. He opened a small shop in Copenhagen and used his own name as the brand.
In 1884, he bought a candy-making business. With his son Gustav helping him, he started making chocolates filled with tasty centers.
Marzipan Becomes a Star
Anthon Berg first made marzipan to keep his customers happy while they waited in line. But it became so popular that in 1898, he started selling it as its own product.
In 1901, Gustav Berg took over the family business. He helped it grow across Denmark, and soon, about 200 people worked for the company.
New Owners and Growth
After Gustav Berg passed away in 1938, Kai Berg became the new director. Later, in 1954, another big Danish chocolate company called Toms bought Anthon Berg.
By 1962, all of Anthon Berg's chocolate production moved to the Toms factory in Ballerup. This factory was designed by a famous architect named Arne Jacobsen.
