History of Toms International
Toms International started in 1924. It was first called Tom Chokoladefabrik A/S. Two chemists from Copenhagen, Hans Trojel and Victor Hans Meyer, founded it. At first, they sold chocolate as a side item in their chemistry shop. Between 1925 and 1929, they began making their own special products.
Company Growth and New Factories
In 1942, Victor B. Strand took over the company. Soon after, he bought another chocolate company called Anthon Berg. In 1961, Toms built a brand new factory. A famous Danish architect, Arne Jacobsen, designed it. The factory was very large, covering 22,000 square meters. There was also a 3,000 square meter office building.
Around 1962, when the new factory was finished, Toms bought A/S J. Høeghs Lakrids og Sukkervarefabrikker. This company was soon renamed Pingvin Lakrids. Toms made its last big purchase in 1971, buying Galle & Jessen. In 2011, Toms also bought a German company called Hanseatische Chocolade GmbH. This included the chocolate brand Hachez.
