How Toms Began
Toms started way back in 1924. It was first called Tom Chokoladefabrik A/S. Two chemists from Copenhagen, Hans Trojel and Victor Hans Meyer, founded it.
At first, they sold chocolate in their small shop in Copenhagen. But soon, they started making their own products. This happened between 1925 and 1929.
Growing the Company
In 1942, Victor B. Strand took over the company. He also bought another chocolate company called Anthon Berg soon after. This helped Toms grow even bigger.
A famous Danish architect named Arne Jacobsen designed a new factory for Toms in 1961. It was a very large building, about 22,000 square meters. There was also an office building that was 3,000 square meters.
Around 1962, Toms bought A/S J. Høeghs Lakrids og Sukkervarefabrikker. This company was soon renamed Pingvin Lakrids. Toms also bought A/S Galle & Jessen in 1971.
In 2011, Toms bought a German company called Hanseatische Chocolade GmbH. With this, they also got the chocolate brand Hachez.
Who Owns Toms?
The company is fully owned by a group called Gerda og Victor B. Strands Fond. This means it's not owned by many different people buying shares.
