Who Was Anthony Brookby?
Anthony Brookby was a smart and respected teacher of religion at a famous university called Magdalen College, Oxford. He was very good at ancient languages like Greek and Hebrew. People also knew him as a fantastic speaker who could give powerful sermons.
Why Did He Upset King Henry VIII?
One day, Anthony Brookby gave a sermon where he spoke out against some of the things King Henry VIII was doing. This made the King very angry.
What Happened to Anthony Brookby?
Because he spoke against the King, Anthony Brookby was arrested. He was treated very harshly to make him change his mind about what he had said. He became very unwell because of this harsh treatment. A kind woman took care of him for two weeks. Sadly, by the King's command, Anthony Brookby was put to death. He was strangled with the Franciscan cord he wore around his waist. This happened on July 19, 1537.

While many records say Anthony Brookby died in 1537, some historical books, like the Victoria County History for Kent, suggest it might have happened a few years earlier, in 1534.
