Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona was born on March 7, 1953. He is a politician from Trinidad and Tobago. He served as the fifth President of Trinidad and Tobago from 2013 to 2018. Before becoming president, he was a High Court Judge in Trinidad and Tobago. He also worked as a judge at the International Criminal Court from 2012 to 2013.

Early Life and Schooling
Anthony Carmona was born in Fyzabad, a town in South Trinidad. He was born on March 7, 1953. He is the oldest of six children. His parents were Dennis Stephen and Barbara Carmona. His family has roots in the "Cocoa Panyol" community.
He went to Santa Flora Government Primary School. Later, he attended Presentation College, San Fernando. He studied at the University of the West Indies. He also went to the Hugh Wooding Law School. He studied there between 1973 and 1983.
Carmona is married to Reema Harrysingh. She is an economist. They got married in 1997. They have two children together.
Mr. Carmona's Career
After finishing law school in 1983, Carmona started his career. He worked as a State Counsel. This means he represented the government in legal matters. In 1989, he became a Senior State Attorney.
From 1994 to 1999, he held important roles. He was first an Assistant, then a Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions. This job involves leading legal cases for the government.
From 2001 to 2004, he worked internationally. He was an Appeals Counsel. He worked for the Office of the Prosecutor. This was at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in The Hague. He also worked for the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha. These courts dealt with serious international crimes.
On May 4, 2019, Carmona received the World Peace Culture Award.
Becoming a High Court Judge
In 2004, Anthony Carmona became a High Court Judge. He served at the Supreme Court of Trinidad and Tobago. As a High Court Judge, he made important decisions in legal cases.
Working at the International Criminal Court
On December 12, 2011, Carmona was chosen to be a judge. He became a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC). This court is located in The Hague. It handles very serious international crimes.
He won the election on the first try. He received 72 out of 104 votes. He needed 70 votes to win. Carmona started his work at the ICC on March 11, 2012. He left this job on March 18, 2013. This was the day he became President of Trinidad and Tobago.

How He Became President
On February 3, 2013, the Prime Minister made an announcement. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said her party would choose Carmona. They wanted him to be the next president. He would take over from President George Maxwell Richards.
The next day, the opposition party agreed. Keith Rowley, the leader of the People's National Movement, supported Carmona. However, later, the opposition party had questions. They wondered if Carmona was allowed to be president. This was because he worked outside the country from 2001 to 2004.
To be president, a person must live in the country for ten years before the election. The Attorney General Anand Ramlogan responded. He said that legal experts confirmed Carmona met the rules.
