Early Life and Education
Reema Harrysingh-Carmona was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, in the United States. Her parents, Cobee Harrysingh and Savitri Seeteram-Harrysingh, were from Indo-Trinidadian families. Her father was an engineering contractor.
Growing Up in Trinidad
Reema attended St. Brigid's Girls' Roman Catholic School and Iere High School in Siparia, Trinidad. She completed her 'O' Level exams through the Caribbean Examinations Council.
Studying in Canada
Later, Reema moved to Canada. She went to Cairine Wilson High School in Ottawa. After high school, she studied at the University of Ottawa. There, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics.
Family Life
Reema Harrysingh-Carmona and Anthony Carmona have two children. Their son, Christian, was born in 1999, and their daughter, Anura, was born in 2002. Reema practices Hinduism, while her husband, Anthony Carmona, is a Roman Catholic Christian.
Career Before First Lady
After living in Canada for 11 years, Reema Harrysingh-Carmona returned to Trinidad and Tobago. She used her economics skills in her work.
Working in Development
She worked at the Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Corporation (PLIPDECO). This company helps develop industrial ports. She also worked for the Small Business Development Corporation, which supports small businesses.
Role as First Lady
Reema Harrysingh-Carmona became the First Lady when her husband, Anthony Carmona, became President of Trinidad and Tobago in 2013. They were married in 1997 at the Catholic La Davina Pastora Church in south Trinidad.
Supporting Important Causes
As First Lady, Reema Harrysingh-Carmona used her position to help with many important social causes. She supported groups working on Diabetes awareness. She also helped with efforts to prevent childhood obesity. Another cause she championed was Autism awareness.
