Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Anthony Duane (born around 1679 – died 1747) was an Irish immigrant who came to New York. He was the father of James Duane, who later became a very important person. James was a congressman, the Mayor of New York City, and a U.S. judge.

Who Was Anthony Duane?

Anthony Duane was born in County Galway, Ireland, around 1679. When he was younger, he joined the Royal Navy and became an officer. This means he was a leader in the navy.

His Journey to New York

Anthony first arrived in New York in 1698. There, he met a woman named Eva, who was the daughter of a local merchant named Dirck Benson. A merchant is someone who buys and sells goods. In 1702, Anthony decided to leave the navy. He married Eva and they settled down in New York City.

A Successful Business Life

After leaving the navy, Anthony Duane started a business career. He became a successful merchant, just like Eva's father. He worked hard and became quite wealthy. He bought land not just to live on, but also to rent out or to develop later. This helped him grow his wealth.

Anthony and Eva had two sons together, Abraham and Cornelius. After Eva passed away, Anthony married again. His second wife was Altea Ketaltas, who came from a rich Dutch merchant family. Anthony and Altea had one child, their son James. Sadly, Altea also passed away in 1736. Anthony married a third time in 1741 to Margaret Riken. She was the widow of Thomas Lynch from Flushing, New York.

Anthony Duane passed away in 1747. His son James went on to become a very important figure in American history.
