Anthony Gate facts for kids
Anthony Gate was an important person at the University of Oxford a long time ago. He was a teacher and also helped run one of the colleges there, called University College, Oxford. He became the leader, or "Master," of University College.
Who Was Anthony Gate?
Anthony Gate was an academic, which means he was a scholar and a teacher. He was also an administrator, meaning he helped manage the university.
His Time at Oxford
Gate studied at Oxford University and earned his first important degree, a Master of Arts (MA), in 1572. This degree showed he had a deep understanding of many subjects. Later, in 1580, he earned his highest degree, a B.Med. in medicine. This meant he was qualified to practice medicine.
A Special Leader
On September 15, 1584, Anthony Gate became the Master of University College. The Master is like the head or principal of the college. He took over after the previous Master, William James, left to become the Dean of Christ Church, another college at Oxford.
What made Anthony Gate special was that he was the first layman to be chosen as Master of University College. A layman is someone who is not a member of the clergy (like a priest or minister). Back then, most college leaders were church officials. It was very unusual for a layman to hold such a position. In fact, it wasn't until 1906, many years later, that another layman, Reginald Walter Macan, became Master of the college.
His Family
Anthony Gate was married to a woman named Judith. They lived in the official home for the Master, called the Lodgings. They had four sons: Peter, Nathaniel, Timothy, and Thomas. All four of his sons also attended University College for their education, following in their father's footsteps.
