Anthony Gell was born around 1522 at Hopton Hall in England. His parents were Ralph and Godeth Gell. He lived during the reigns of King Edward VI and Queen Elizabeth I. These were important times in English history.
Early Life and Legal Training
Anthony Gell began studying law in the early 1540s. He attended a place called Clement's Inn in London. This was a special place where young people learned to become lawyers. While studying, he even heard a famous speaker named Hugh Latimer give a sermon.
In 1545, Anthony Gell became the head of Clement's Inn. Soon after, he was "called to the bar" at the Inner Temple. This meant he was officially allowed to work as a lawyer. The Inner Temple was one of the main places where lawyers trained in London.
A Career in Law
Anthony Gell became a very successful lawyer. He was known as a "law reporter." This means he wrote down details of important court cases. These reports helped other lawyers and judges understand how laws were applied.
Some of his law reports still exist today. One is kept at the Library of Congress in the United States. Another is at the Derbyshire Record Office in England. In 1559, he became a "bencher" of the Inner Temple. This was a senior position for experienced lawyers.
Helping His Community
Anthony Gell earned a lot of money as a lawyer. He used some of this money to help his community. He gave money to start a grammar school in a town called Wirksworth. A grammar school in those days was a school that taught subjects like Latin and Greek.
This school is still open today and is known as the Anthony Gell School. It helps students learn and grow, just as Anthony Gell wanted.
Later Life and Legacy
In 1575, Anthony Gell was given a special design called a "coat of arms." This was a symbol of his family and achievements. He never married and did not have children.
Anthony Gell passed away on June 29, 1583. He was buried in St Mary's Church, Wirksworth. You can still see a statue of him there today. His legacy lives on through the school he helped create.
