Who Was Sir Anthony Knyvett?

Sir Anthony Knyvett was born in London. His father, Charles Knyvett, worked for powerful noblemen like the Duke of Norfolk and John Bourchier, who was in charge of Calais (a town in France that belonged to England).

Anthony Knyvett himself became a "gentleman usher of the privy chamber" to King Henry VIII. This meant he was a trusted assistant who helped the king with his daily activities and managed his private rooms. He was mentioned in a royal document from 1526 called the Eltham Ordinance, which set rules for the king's household.

A Difficult Decision

Sir Anthony Knyvett held a very important job as the Lieutenant of the Tower of London. This role meant he was in charge of the famous Tower, which was often used as a prison.

He is remembered in a famous book called Foxe's Book of Martyrs. This book tells stories of people who faced challenges for their beliefs. Sir Anthony Knyvett is noted for bravely refusing to continue a harsh punishment on a Protestant woman named Anne Askew. His actions showed courage and a strong sense of right and wrong.

Building and Leading

In 1544, Sir Anthony Knyvett was given another important role: Governor of Portsmouth. This was a key port city in England. He was responsible for overseeing the construction of Southsea Castle in the same year. This castle was built to defend the coast from attacks.

The End of His Life

In 1554, Sir Anthony Knyvett joined a group of people in a protest known as Wyatt's Rebellion. This rebellion was against the new queen, Queen Mary I. Knyvett and his group were defeated in a battle near Hartley.

After the rebellion failed, Sir Anthony Knyvett was captured. He was put to death at the Tower of London on March 1, 1554.
