Anthony Mitchell (born May 27, 1989) is a former professional rugby league player from Australia. He was born in Brisbane, Queensland. Anthony played as a hooker, a key position in rugby league. He was also chosen to play for the Indigenous All Stars team. Throughout his career, he played for three different teams in the National Rugby League (NRL): the Parramatta Eels, Sydney Roosters, and North Queensland Cowboys.

Anthony Mitchell's Rugby League Journey

Starting Out in Rugby League

Anthony Mitchell spent his early childhood in Brisbane. When he was five, his parents separated. He then moved to Townsville with his father, Steve, and grandmother, Margaret. In Townsville, Anthony started playing rugby league for the Townsville Brothers club. He also went to Ignatius Park College, a high school famous for rugby league.

In 2006, Anthony was picked for the Australian Institute of Sport's under-18 team. They toured France and England. The next year, in 2007, he played for the Queensland under-19 team. At 17, he joined the junior system of the Parramatta Eels. He played very well for them in the first ever National Youth Competition in 2008. He played in all 26 of the Eels' games that season.

In 2009, Anthony played fewer games, only 12, due to injuries. During this time, he played in different positions. He was a hooker, lock, interchange player, and even a five-eighth. He also had the chance to be captain for two games for the Eels.

Playing for the Parramatta Eels

Anthony Mitchell spent most of the 2010 season playing for the Wentworthville Magpies. This team was linked to the Eels. Near the end of the 2010 season, he got his chance to play in the top-level NRL. He made his first-grade debut for Parramatta against the Brisbane Broncos. He even scored a try in their winning game. He played two more games for the club that year.

Even though he had only played three NRL games, Anthony was chosen for the Indigenous All Stars team. This happened because another player, Preston Campbell, had to pull out due to injury. In 2011, he played four more games for Parramatta. This brought his total games for the Eels to seven.

Moving to the Sydney Roosters

In the middle of the 2011 season, Anthony Mitchell signed with the Sydney Roosters. He had played only seven games for Parramatta. He played ten games for the Roosters in 2011. In 2012, he was again selected to play for the Indigenous All Stars team. Anthony played well during his 12 months with the Sydney Roosters, even with limited game time.

Joining the North Queensland Cowboys

In June 2012, Anthony Mitchell made another mid-season move. He had played seventeen games for the Sydney Roosters, with seven of those in 2012. He signed with his hometown team, the North Queensland Cowboys. The Roosters released him on June 25, just before a transfer deadline. He arrived in Townsville the next day and started training with the Cowboys.

Anthony played against the New Zealand Warriors that same week. He wore the number 19 jersey. He was a last-minute addition to the team. Anthony played for 60 minutes and impressed the coaches. This earned him a spot on the interchange bench for the next game against the Melbourne Storm.

Anthony said that playing for the North Queensland Cowboys was a dream come true. He had no regrets about leaving the Sydney Roosters mid-season. He scored his first try for the Cowboys in their 29–16 win against the Wests Tigers. This happened in round 19 of the 2012 season. He was set to stay with the Cowboys until the end of the 2013 season.

In round 25 of the 2012 season, Anthony filled in for the injured halfback Michael Morgan. He helped set up all three of the Cowboys' tries. They held off a strong challenge from Newcastle to win 22–14.

Playing for the Townsville Blackhawks

Anthony Mitchell left the North Queensland Cowboys when his contract ended in 2014. He then joined the newly formed Townsville Blackhawks team. This team played in the Queensland Cup competition.

Retiring from Rugby League

Anthony played three seasons with the Townsville Blackhawks. He even served as captain for one of those seasons. At the end of 2017, Anthony Mitchell decided to retire from rugby league. He finished his career as the player with the most games for the Townsville Blackhawks.
