Anthony Page was an English Catholic priest who lived a long time ago, from 1563 to April 1593. He is remembered as a Catholic martyr, which means he died because of his faith. The Catholic Church recognized him as "Blessed" in 1987.

The Story of Anthony Page

Anthony Page was born in 1563 in a place called Harrow-on-the-Hill, in Middlesex, England. His family was well-known. He went to a famous school, Christ Church, Oxford, in 1581.

Becoming a Priest

In 1584, Anthony decided to study to become a priest. He went to the English College in Reims, France. This college was a special place for English Catholics who wanted to become priests during a time when it was difficult to do so in England.

He took his first steps towards becoming a priest in 1585. Later, he became a deacon in 1590 and a full priest in 1591. People who knew him said he was very smart and kind. They admired his good heart and friendly nature.

Facing Danger

In England during this time, being a Catholic priest was very dangerous. The government made laws against Catholic priests. In 1593, there was a big search for priests in the northern part of England.

Anthony Page was found hiding at Heworth Manor, near York. He was discovered in a secret spot at the bottom of a haystack. He was arrested because he was a priest.

His Legacy

Anthony Page was put on trial and found guilty of being a priest. He was executed in York on April 30, 1593.

Many years later, on November 22, 1987, Pope Pope John Paul II declared Anthony Page "Blessed." He was recognized as one of the Eighty-five martyrs of England and Wales. These are people who died for their Catholic faith in England and Wales. Their special day is celebrated on May 4th.
