The Anthracite Bank Building, also called The Beard Building, is a historic building in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. It's located in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. This building has a long and interesting history. It was built way back in 1850.

History of the Anthracite Bank Building

The Anthracite Bank Building is a three-story brick building. It was designed in the Italianate style. This style was popular in the mid-1800s. The first floor of the building is made of white marble.

Early Bank Days

The building first opened as Tamaqua's very first bank. It was an important place for people to save and manage their money. It served as a bank until 1865.

Home of a Hero

After being a bank, the building became a home. It was where Colonel Henry L. Cake lived with his wife, Eliza. Colonel Cake was a hero from the American Civil War. He led the 96th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. He was a very brave soldier. He even became a brigadier general.

Colonel Cake's Public Service

After the war, Colonel Cake continued to serve his country. He became a member of the United States Congress. He worked in Congress for two terms. He helped make important decisions for the country.

Later Uses

In more recent times, the building found a new purpose. Starting in 2002, it became a cozy place to stay. It was called the Anthracite Inn Bed & Breakfast. Guests could stay there and enjoy the historic atmosphere.
