Coulter's snapdragon, scientifically known as Antirrhinum coulterianum, is a type of snapdragon plant. It's also sometimes called Sairocarpus coulterianus. This plant is a beautiful wildflower found in certain parts of North America.
Where It Grows
Coulter's snapdragon is a plant that naturally lives in southern California and Baja California in Mexico. You can find it growing in dry, bushy areas like deserts. It also likes the hills and mountains near the coast. This plant often appears in places where there have been recent fires.
What It Looks Like
Coulter's snapdragon is an annual plant. This means it grows from a seed, flowers, produces seeds, and then dies all within one year. It has a stem that stands upright. This stem often leans on other plants or objects for support. Most of the stem is smooth and doesn't have hairs.
Leaves and Stem
The leaves on the stem are not very many. They are usually long and narrow. Often, you will see a group of leaves shaped like a circle at the very bottom of the stem. This special group of leaves is called a basal rosette. Coulter's snapdragon is the only type of Antirrhinum plant that forms this kind of rosette.
Flowers
At the top of the stem, you'll find a cluster of flowers. This cluster is called an inflorescence. The flowers are white and look like classic snapdragons. When they first open, they might have a light lavender or pink color. Each flower is about one centimeter wide. The top part of the stem, where the flowers are, can be quite fuzzy or woolly.
