The Antisana Ecological Reserve (which is Reserva Ecológica Antisana in Spanish) is a special protected area in Ecuador. It is located in the Napo Province, within the Quijos and Archidona areas. This reserve was created to protect the amazing plants and animals that live there. It is named after the Antisana volcano, a large and impressive mountain in the region. The reserve covers a huge space, about 120,000 hectares, and was officially established in July 1993.

The mountain tapir (Tapirus pinchaque) is one of the rare animals found in Antisana Ecological Reserve.

The Antisana Ecological Reserve is home to many unique and important creatures and plants. Some of them are very rare and need special protection.

Here are some of the special animals you might find:

  • The mountain tapir (Tapirus pinchaque) is an endangered animal. This means there are very few left in the world.
  • The white-fronted spider monkey (Ateles belzebuth) is also endangered. These monkeys are known for their long arms and tails.
  • The northern pudu (Pudu mephistophiles) is a tiny deer, and it's considered vulnerable.
  • The oncilla (Leopardus tigrinus) is a small wild cat. It is also vulnerable.
  • The bush dog (Speothos venaticus) is a rare dog-like animal. It is listed as near threatened.
  • The wattled guan (Aburria aburri) is a type of bird. It is also near threatened.
  • The Fuegian snipe (Gallinago stricklandii) is a wading bird. It is near threatened.
  • The Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) is a very large bird. It is near threatened.
  • The spot-winged parrotlet (Touit stictopterus) is a small parrot. It is vulnerable.
  • The greater scythebill (Campylorhamphus pucherani) is a unique bird with a curved beak. It is near threatened.
  • The southeastern giant antpitta (Grallaria gigantea gigantea) is a large bird. It is vulnerable.
  • The giant conebill (Oreomanes fraseri) is another bird. It is near threatened.
  • The Napo plump toad (Osornophryne antisana) is a type of toad. It is endangered.

Some special plants found here include:

  • Senecio antisanae and Senecio iscoensis (which might be Aetheolaena senecioides). Scientists are still gathering information about these plants.
