Antoine Labotte Carr (born July 23, 1961) is an American former basketball player. He was nicknamed "Big Dawg." Antoine played as a power forward and sometimes as a center. He played for six different teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA) over 16 seasons.
Early Life and College Basketball
Antoine Carr was born in Oklahoma City. He became a basketball star at Wichita Heights High School. After high school, he received a scholarship to play at Wichita State University.
He played for four years at Wichita State. He was a key player on a team with future NBA stars. These included Xavier McDaniel and Cliff Levingston. Antoine averaged 17 points per game in college. He shot over 55% from the field. In his last college game, he scored 47 points. This was a school record.
Antoine also played for the U.S. national team. He won a silver medal with them. This was at the 1982 FIBA World Championship.
Professional Basketball Career
Antoine Carr was a top player in college. He averaged 22.5 points and 7.6 rebounds in his senior year. The Detroit Pistons picked him in the 1983 NBA draft. He was the eighth player chosen overall.
Antoine did not sign a contract with the Pistons. Instead, he played one season in Italy. He played for Simac Milano in 1983–84. He then returned to the NBA for the 1984–85 season.
He played six full seasons with the Atlanta Hawks. The Hawks had his draft rights. Later, he moved to the Sacramento Kings in the 1989–90 season. In Sacramento, Antoine was a team star. He averaged 20 points per game. He scored 1,551 points that season. This was his best scoring year.
Antoine also played for the San Antonio Spurs. He was known for his high field goal percentage. In 1994, he played a big playoff series. He filled in for an injured David Robinson. Antoine played some of his best games. However, the Spurs lost the series.
On October 29, 1994, Antoine joined the Utah Jazz. He sometimes started as a center. He played alongside power forward Karl Malone. When he didn't start, he was an energetic sixth man. Coach Jerry Sloan used him a lot. This was especially true when the Jazz reached the NBA finals. He helped the Jazz win Game 5 of the 1998 Finals. He made important jump shots against the Chicago Bulls.
Antoine finished his NBA career with the Houston Rockets and Vancouver Grizzlies. He played a reserve role for both teams. He scored 9,176 points in his NBA career. Antoine was good at handling the ball close to the basket. He was known for his power and dunking. He could also make medium to long jump shots. He shot 50% from the field. He made 78% of his free throws. After an eye injury, he wore orange-tinted protective glasses. He wore them for the rest of his NBA career.
After the NBA, Antoine played for the Kansas City Knights. This team was in the ABA. He also played one season for the Greek club Ionikos NF.
Antoine's younger brother, Henry Carr, also played basketball. Henry played for Wichita State. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Clippers in 1987.
