Antoni Maria Badia i Margarit (born May 30, 1920 – died November 16, 2014) was an important Catalan expert on languages. He was a linguist, meaning he studied how languages work. He was also a philologist, which means he studied languages through old texts.

He was born in Barcelona, Spain. Antoni Maria Badia i Margarit spent his life studying the grammar and history of the Catalan language. He helped us understand more about this language.

He finished his studies in 1943 at the Universitat de Barcelona. There, he became a professor. He taught about the history of the Catalan language and the Spanish language. Later, he became the head of the Universitat de Barcelona. This role is called a "rector." He was rector from 1978 to 1986.

Antoni Maria Badia i Margarit also taught at many universities around the world. These included places like Munich, Heidelberg, Georgetown, and Paris. Several universities gave him an honorary degree. This special award is called "doctor honoris causa."

He led many important groups related to languages. He was president of the Société de Linguistique Romane. He also led the Philology section of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans. He was president of the Associació Internacional de Llengua i Literatura Catalanes. He also led the North-American Catalan Society. He was president of the Deutsch-Katalanische Gesellschaft. In 1986, he led the Segon Congrés Internacional de la Llengua Catalana (1986). He passed away in 2014 when he was 94 years old.

Badia-Cardús Library

In 1975, Antoni Maria Badia i Margarit and his wife, Maria Cardús, made a special gift. They decided to donate their entire library and archive to the Biblioteca de Catalunya. This happened when the Congrés de Cultura Catalana was just starting.

Their collection is very valuable. It has over a thousand books, magazines, and small papers. These items show all the studies and teaching they did. Most of the collection is about Romance languages and linguistics. It focuses mainly on the Catalan and Spanish languages. Many of these books and papers are very rare or unique.
