Antoni Ramallets Simón (born July 1, 1924 – died July 30, 2013) was a famous Spanish football goalkeeper and later a manager.

He spent most of his amazing career playing for FC Barcelona. This was during the 1950s and early 1960s. He was known as one of the best goalkeepers in La Liga, winning the Ricardo Zamora Trophy five times. He also helped Barcelona win 18 major club trophies!

Antoni Ramallets played for the Spanish national team in the 1950 FIFA World Cup. After he stopped playing, he became a manager. He led several teams in Spain, including Real Zaragoza, where he won two big trophies.

Playing for Clubs: Antoni Ramallets' Career

Antoni Ramallets joined FC Barcelona in 1946 when he was 23 years old. He had previously played for Real Valladolid. At first, he was a backup goalkeeper. But soon, he became the main goalkeeper for Barcelona.

Becoming Barcelona's Star Goalkeeper

His first game in La Liga was on November 28, 1948. Barcelona won 2–1 against Sevilla FC. Even though he only played one game that season, he quickly became super important for the team's defense.

Barcelona, then called Club de Fútbol Barcelona, won many titles with him. They won six league titles and five Spanish Cups! In the 1951–52 season, Barcelona won five major trophies. Ramallets played 28 league games that year. He also won his first Ricardo Zamora Trophy for being the best goalkeeper.

Teammates and Testimonial Match

During the 1950s, Ramallets was a key player in a very successful Barcelona team. He played alongside other legends like László Kubala and Luis Suárez. He played a total of 538 games for Barcelona. This included 288 games in the Spanish league.

On March 6, 1962, Barcelona played a special game just for him. It was called a testimonial. They played against Hamburger SV and won 5–1. This showed how much the club and fans loved him.

Managing Teams: Ramallets as a Coach

After he stopped playing, Antoni Ramallets became a football manager. He coached several teams over the next ten years. One of these teams was his old club, Real Valladolid.

Success with Real Zaragoza

In the 1963–64 season, he led Real Zaragoza. He helped them finish fourth in the league. More importantly, they won two major trophies that year! They won the Spanish Cup and the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. He had actually won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup twice as a player with Barcelona. In the final, Zaragoza beat another Spanish team, Valencia CF.

Playing for Spain: International Career

Antoni Ramallets played 35 games for the Spanish national team. His first game was against Chile on June 29, 1950. This was during the 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The Cat of Maracanã

During the World Cup, he became very famous. He earned the nickname The Cat of Maracanã. This was because of his amazing saves and quick reflexes. He helped Spain reach the second stage of the tournament.

Ramallets also played seven games for the unofficial Catalan national side.

His Final Years

Antoni Ramallets passed away at his home in Vilafranca del Penedès, near Barcelona. He died on July 30, 2013, at the age of 89.
