Antonio Chacón (born in 1869, died in 1929) was a famous Spanish flamenco singer. In flamenco, a singer is called a cantaor. He was known as one of the greatest flamenco singers of all time.

Early Life and Career

Antonio Chacón was born in Jerez de la Frontera, a city in the Cádiz Province of Spain. He started performing flamenco around 1884 to earn money. He traveled across Andalucia, a region in southern Spain, with his friends, the Molina brothers. Antonio Molina was a dancer, and Javier Molina was a guitarist.

Later, a famous flamenco artist named Silverio Franconetti hired Chacón to sing at his café in Seville. Chacón became very well-known for his amazing skill in singing different styles of flamenco songs. These styles included the cartagenera, malagueñas, granaína, and media granaína. Because of his talent, people often called him "Don," which is a title of great respect.

A Respected Performer

Antonio Chacón was so talented that other successful flamenco singers would let him perform last. This was because audiences would often leave after he finished singing! If other singers had not performed before him, they would have been singing to an empty room. This shows how much people admired his performances.

He performed with many of the best musicians of his time. The great guitarist Ramón Montoya played with Chacón for more than ten years, until the early 1920s. Another famous guitarist, Sabicas, also played for Chacón early in his own career.

Flamenco Contest and Legacy

In 1922, Antonio Chacón took part in the famous Concurso de Cante Jondo (Flamenco Singing Contest) in Granada. He was given a special place of honor and was chosen to lead the judges for this important flamenco competition.

Many people still believe that Antonio Chacón was "el mejor de todos los tiempos," which means "the best of all time." He passed away in Madrid.
