Antonio Guiteras y Holmes (born November 22, 1906 – died May 8, 1935) was an important politician in Cuba during the 1930s. He wanted to bring big changes to his country.

A Young Leader's Journey

Antonio Guiteras was born on November 22, 1906, in Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, in the USA. He grew up during a time when Cuba was facing many political problems.

He believed in a type of socialism that aimed to make society fairer for everyone. He wanted to see major changes in how Cuba was run.

Standing Up for Change

In 1931, Guiteras helped start a group called the Unión Revolucionaria. This group worked to bring about political change in Cuba.

He first became well-known as a strong student leader. He worked with Julio Antonio Mella, another young person who wanted to see big changes in Cuba. Guiteras believed that people could achieve freedom by directly challenging the government.

Working in Government

After the old president, Gerardo Machado y Morales, was removed from power in 1933, a new government was formed. Antonio Guiteras became the Minister of the Interior in this new government, led by President Dr. Ramón Grau San Martín.

During his time as minister, many important changes were made. These included setting a minimum wage for workers and creating rules for fair labor. They also worked to make education more open and took control of important parts of the economy for the country.

This period was sometimes called the "government of 100 days" because it lasted for a short time. After this, Guiteras became even more focused on his goals. He started a new group called Joven Cuba. This group was inspired by the ideas of José Martí, a Cuban national hero, and focused on helping working-class people.

His Fight for Cuba

Antonio Guiteras was deeply committed to his ideas for Cuba. He was inspired by different revolutions around the world, like those in Mexico and Russia. He also looked at struggles for independence, such as in Ireland.

He believed in taking direct action to make changes happen. He thought that people should actively work to improve their country. He was very dedicated to his cause and wanted to see a better future for Cuba.

The End of His Journey

Antonio Guiteras died on May 8, 1935, in Matanzas, Cuba. He and some of his friends were in an old fort, waiting for a boat to take them to Mexico. He planned to continue his work for the Cuban people from there.

However, they were found by the army and a gun battle took place. Guiteras and his companions died during this fight. He is remembered as a passionate leader who fought for his beliefs and for the people of Cuba.
