Early Life and Political Career
Antonio Marchesano was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1930. He was a member of the Colorado Party, which is one of Uruguay's main political groups.
In 1966, he was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies. This is like a parliament where elected officials make laws for the country.
During a time when Uruguay was led by a military government, Marchesano supported Julio María Sanguinetti. Sanguinetti later became president in November 1984. After this, Marchesano was again elected to the Chamber of Deputies.
In February 1985, he became the President of the Chamber of Deputies. This meant he was in charge of the meetings and work of the deputies. Later, in April 1986, he was chosen to be the Interior Minister. This is a very important job, similar to a minister of homeland security, responsible for public safety and internal affairs.
Antonio Marchesano passed away in Montevideo on January 24, 2019.
